Job Description

Main Function:

Responsible for processing specimens for reference laboratory testing. Report limited test results to ordering physicians. Acts as an information resource to clients. Trains new personnel as assigned. Performs other nontechnical functions as assigned.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Follows the laboratory’s procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results.
  • Handles all specimens sent to reference laboratories (UMMC and LabCorp) ensuring the proper specimen type, documentation and special handling.
  • Performs appropriate quality control according to departmental quality control policies, documents all quality control activities.
  • Documents all problems and seeks direction from a Supervisor or the Laboratory Director on how to resolve the problems. When required, initiates occurrence reporting forms.
  • Ensures immediate handling of STAT testing. Monitors pending work list periodically during the shift and at the end of the shift. Assures that all ordered tests in his/her area have been appropriately handled.
  • Maintains work area in a clean and efficient state. Disinfects work station and counter tops at the end of the shift. Leaves workstation prepared for following shift. Monitors and replaces inventory and supplies as required.
  • Follows safety and infection control policies for the department and the hospital. Uses safety equipment as appropriate.
  • Completes annual safety training, continuing education and competency testing when due
  • Receives and processes specimens for testing in various Core laboratory departments, according to established procedures. Operates centrifuge. Separates specimens according to department.
  • Responsible for shared duties in Anatomic Pathology Dept. when needed. This will include specimen pickup from the OR, processing, batching and shipping of these specimens.
  • Pulls up pending phlebotomy orders, prints out orders from the computer. Monitors the computer for outstanding orders.
  • Encourages teamwork and interdepartmental cooperation. Responds to customer inquiries. Provides high level of customer service through positive interaction and helpful demeanor.
  • Assists with the training of new personnel on Laboratory Assistant duties.
  • Accepts responsibility for other duties or projects as needed or assigned

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • PC literate, able to utilize basic computer functions.
  • Previous lab front desk and or sample processing experience required.
