Description

The Lead Medical Technologist is responsible for overseeing and assisting in the technical testing In a laboratory area. The Lead Technologist performs clinical diagnostic and serological testing to aid the physicians and clinical care team in the diagnosis and treatment of the patient. The Lead Technologist supports management by ensuring appropriate staffing and efficient processes within the department.



Responsibilities
  • Responsible for leading and performing clinical laboratory procedures to obtain data for diagnosis and treatment of disease or disease processes
    • Delegates tasks and sets goals and deadlines
    • Leads and performs diagnostic tests for interpretation or therapeutic intervention as requested
    • Performs varied or specialized bacteriological, serological, hematological and related examinations according to established standards
    • Completes all testing; evaluates the validity of laboratory data, and records test results
    • Operates and calibrates all equipment in the area of specialization
    • Maintains adequate staffing by assuming responsibilities as needed
  • Communicates the patient and health care information to the appropriate health care provider
    • Reports all critical test results or critical results to the appropriate health care provider in a timely manner
    • Communicates with physician, pathologists and nursing staff regarding test procedures and results
    • Compiles and records test results into the electronic health record
    • Communicates expectations to team members and support staff
  • Acts as an extension of the leadership team and provides guidance to ensure processes and expectations are met
    • Enforces, follows, and supports all processes, policies, and procedures; and ensures all staff are updated when changes occur
    • Monitors performance of department process, staff work schedules, time and attendance
    • Identifies training needs and provides coaching for new and current employees


Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology/Medical Laboratory Science or equivalent from a NAACLS accredited institution; or Bachelors degree in other science field with required certification may be accepted.

Certification:

  • Certification as a Medical Technologist (MT) or Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) by the American Society of Clinical Pathology is required.

Experience:

  • 4 years as a Medical Technologist/Medical Lab Scientist in a clinical setting

  • Proficient in clinical diagnostic and serological testing procedures
  • Multitasking, time-management, and organization
