Microbiologist

Essential Functions and Responsibilities: to ensure the quality and safety of the product will include, but not be limited to:

Basic laboratory tasks, including sample preparation, routine testing and data collection.

  • Perform routine and advanced microbiological testing of raw materials, in-process samples, finished products, environmental monitoring samples, and water systems.
  • Prepare, revise, and ensure Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are followed; ensure LIMS entries, laboratory records, and batch documentation are completed accurately, completely, and in a timely manner.
  • Successfully complete required training and demonstrate working knowledge of Quality Assurance, Quality Control, biosafety, aseptic technique, and microbiological laboratory procedures.
    iv. Perform microbiological testing using approved methods (e.g., APC, YM, coliform/E. coli, pathogen screening, organism identification); maintain accurate documentation, logs, and records.
    v. Independently interpret test results, identify atypical findings or trends, and escalate issues as required.
  • Troubleshoot microbiological test methods and instruments; support method verification, optimization, and validation activities as directed.
  • Support and co-lead laboratory investigations including deviations, Out-of-Specification (OOS) results, nonconformances, and lab events; assist with root cause analysis and corrective actions.
    viii. Aid in training and mentoring entry-level microbiologists and technicians on laboratory operations, SOPs, and best practices.
  • Clean, maintain, and ensure proper functioning of laboratory equipment and work areas according to protocols.
  • Conduct data mining, research, and technical reviews related to microbiological testing as needed or directed.
  • Verify and maintain organized, clean, sanitary, and safe laboratory conditions; support enforcement of safety and quality regulations.
  • Ensure all materials are tested appropriately and meet internal quality standards.
  • Ensure timely escalation of laboratory deviations, OOS results, and quality events to management and QA.
  • Adhere to current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP), Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), and ISO 17025 requirements as applicable.
  • Work closely and effectively within a team-based laboratory environment.
  • Assist with the development, evaluation and review of policies procedures and methodologies for the lab to obtain and maintain compliance with accreditation.
  • Perform duties safely and report unsafe conditions or behaviors.
  • Regular and timely attendance is essential; flexibility in work hours may be required to meet business needs.
  • Assist in other duties as needed and directed.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in microbiology, Biology, or a closely related scientific field with laboratory coursework.
  • 3–5 years of microbiology laboratory experience in dietary supplement, nutraceutical, pharmaceutical, food, or environmental testing environments preferred.
    • Experience with microbiological methods and equipment, including plating, dilutions, environmental monitoring, rapid microbiology methods, and basic organism identification.
    • Strong ethics and integrity; process-driven and quality-focused
    • Mathematical skills including accuracy with arithmetic, decimals, and percentages
    • Language skills: ability to read, write, and comprehend instructions and communicate effectively in English.
      • Computer skills: proficiency with Microsoft Office; familiarity with LIMS or electronic data systems preferred.
      • Ability to work in a fast-paced GMP manufacturing environment and consistently meet deadlines.
      • Basic laboratory dexterity required for microbiology lab work, including handling media, plates, glassware, and biological materials. Ensure laboratory compliance with ISO and FDA requirements and obtain and maintain laboratory regulatory regulations.
      • Reporting to work regularly and timely is essential to the success of this position.

      Preferred Knowledge, skills and abilities

      • Strong working knowledge of microbiology principles, aseptic technique, contamination control, and laboratory safety protocols.
      • Skilled in organization, communication, detailed documentation, and adherence to SOPs with strong attention to detail.
      • Ability to prioritize work and adjust priorities based on operational needs and urgency.
      • Demonstrated analytical thinking, problem sensitivity, and problem-solving abilities.
      • Knowledge of dietary supplement or food manufacturing, cGMP, FDA, USP, AOAC, and ISO laboratory requirements.
      • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
      • Communication skills: professionally interact and communicate with internal and external customers/vendors, laboratories.
      • Skilled in monitoring, troubleshooting, critical thinking, process control, time management, following through, serving customers, and active listening.
      • Work with a mindset of continuous process improvement, cost-reduction, improved efficiency with lab while maintaining customer satisfaction and high-level standards.
      • Adhere to and promote proper practices and techniques which are consistent with current operating procedures, training requirements, safety practices and company policies.
