About the role | Mō te tūranga:
Our Biochemistry department is on the lookout for a passionate and capable Intern or Medical Laboratory Scientist to join our dynamic team in Wellington. This is a permanent, full-time position, working 80 hours per fortnight.

The department provides a broad range of diagnostic testing, including clinical biochemistry assays, metabolic and endocrine testing, therapeutic drug monitoring, and related analyses. You will have the opportunity to work with cutting-edge technology and contribute to essential diagnostic services that support patient care across diverse specialties.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform a wide range of diagnostic and investigative tests within the Biochemistry section, including clinical chemistry assays, metabolic testing, endocrine analyses, and therapeutic drug monitoring.
  • Ensure accurate, timely, and high-quality test results in alignment with established laboratory standards and protocols.
  • Operate, maintain, and assist in troubleshooting advanced laboratory instruments and automated analysers.
  • Participate actively in quality control and quality assurance procedures.
  • Maintain precise documentation and records in compliance with regulatory and accreditation requirements.
  • Collaborate with scientific and clinical staff to support accurate diagnosis and effective patient care.
  • Adhere strictly to health and safety protocols to ensure a safe laboratory environment.
  • Contribute to ongoing quality and process improvement initiatives within the department.

To be successful in this role you need to have:

  • Possesses a solid understanding of laboratory operations, including quality assurance processes, safe handling of equipment, and practical hands-on experience in biochemistry testing is desirable, but not essential.
  • Works methodically and consistently, adhering to strict quality and safety procedures to ensure reliable and accurate test results.
  • Thrives in a team-oriented environment, demonstrating initiative, excellent communication skills, and the ability to perform well under pressure in a fast-paced, deadline-driven setting.
  • Able to work rostered and rotating weekends and evenings, understanding that these shifts attract penal rates.
  • Eligibility to work in New Zealand.

If you are not already registered with the Medical Science Council of New Zealand, we will support you working towards becoming a Qualified Medical Laboratory Pre-Analytical Scientist within 2 years of employment
