POSITION SUMMARY
Under the directions of the Medical Directors and management staff, processes and tests all types of laboratory specimens for all age groups from neonates to geriatric patients; reviews and reports lab results; performs operational duties, maintenance and advanced troubleshooting of laboratory instrumentation and equipment. , Completes established competencies for the position within designated introductory period. Other related duties as assigned.
General Functions:
Processes and tests blood and other body fluid specimens for the clinical laboratory
Reviews test results and applies the correct clinical interpretation of that data
Reports lab results accurately and responsively, to include use of a laboratory information system
Performs operation, maintenance and advanced troubleshooting of laboratory instrumentation and
equipment
Performs venous and capillary phlebotomy and ensures specimen integrity as necessary.
Performs basic clerical functions
Writes procedures and assist in the development of department policies
Acts as a resource person for providing information and problem solving for the Medical
Technicians, Medical Lab Scientist I, Phlebotomists and other laboratory personnel
Additional responsibility includes assisting with new equipment validation and implementation,
employee and student training and competency assessment, regulatory compliance responsibilities
for CAP, TCJ, AABB or other agencies, quality assurance, quality control and instrument
maintenance.
Assists with R&D projects as required
Relays orders, take inventory and stocks supplies
Utilizes resources efficiently and effectively
Maintains safe environment
Addresses patient population-specific needs
Participates in Performance Improvement activities
MINIMUM EDUCATION: Associate's Degree from an approved college or university and/or graduate of an accredited school of medical laboratory technicians, or equivalent such as military training as defined by 42 CFR 493.1489. The above meets required criteria as defined by CLIA regulations for High Complexity testing (42 CFR 493.1489, Jan. 24, 2003
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE: 0-2 years as a medical laboratory technician.
PREFERRED CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURE: Certified (registered) or registry-eligible in accordance with an approved certifying agency, e.g. ASCP, HHS, AMT. Registry eligible should obtain certification within 1 year from date of hire. Once certified, no annual renewals are required.
