Duties & Responsibilities
Division: Wits Diagnostic and Innovation Hub (DIH) Main purpose of the job:
To receive, analyse, produce and interpret participant results from human specimens and to maintain the quality management system for the laboratory
Location:
Parktown, Johannesburg
Key performance areas:
Malaria Microscopy:-
Examination of blood films for malaria parasites for QC
Quantification and reporting of parasitemia in parasites per microlitre
Reporting of results to Project Manager
Counting and reporting parasitaemia in p/ul
Preparation and staining of blood films
Meet daily and monthly targets
Specimen receipt and processing:-
Verify if information on the specimen matches the laboratory requisition form
Receive specimens and follow rejection criteria
Data entry of specimens on LIMS according to defined protocols
Separation and labelling specimens
Generation of specimen worklists
Generation of specimen referral lists
Data capturing on LIMS
Specimen storage on LDMS/LIMS
PBMC specimen processing and storage
Laboratory Administration:-
Record keeping and archive of documents as directed by protocols
Demonstrate cost consciousness and assists in meeting budgetary targets
Analyse, interpret, and produce participant results :-
Check suitability of samples to be analysed
Perform instrument and manual tests
Analyse and interpret the results
Capture manual test results on laboratory information system
Quality Control :-
Perform QC checks on data entries
Monitor temperature for freezers, fridges and testing and processing areas
Perform equipment preventive maintenance and maintain records
Monitor and control stock levels
Monitor and control workflows and turnaround times
Reports quality related problems and attempts to solve them and reports to Laboratory Manager
Follow SOPs at all times
Perform internal and external quality control in conjunction with colleagues
Report all non-conformances within the QMS to management
Review and implement changes to SOPs in order to ensure the laboratory is constantly able to provide a high quality, cost effective and correct results
Shipments:-
Quality Control of samples before shipments
Respond to and report quality control issues to Laboratory Manager and Project Manager
Required minimum education and training:
National Diploma in Biomendical Technology
Professional Body Registration:
Registered with Health Professions Council of South Africa as Medical Technologist
Required minimum work experience:
Minimum of 2 years’ experience in Malaria and other blood parasites microscopy
Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities:
Registration as a Medical Technologist / Medical Technician in Haematology/Microbiology/Parasitology with HPCSA
Diagnostic or research laboratory experience
Good Clinical Laboratory Practice (GCLP) and Good Clinical Practice (GCP) courses
Strong visual perception and good hand-eye coordination
Strong attention to detail
Ability to meet deadlines
Ability to work under pressure in fast paced clinical trial environment
